  1. forgot me. Her Alzheimer’s has progressed enough that she finally forgot the turmoil I’d caused her family for years. Decades.
    Since I’d turned over a new leaf last Thanksgiving, given up my gambling addiction, resigned from the shady treasurer roles I’d filled in every committee in this town, I’d felt better about the future. My future. The town’s future. But Mrs. Appleby refused to let me forget what I’d done. Her Alzheimer’s diagnosis in January brought a glimmer of relief to me. Selfish, I know. But some choices can’t be forgiven or forgotten without a miracle like Alzheimer’s.
    And now here she comes, ready to introduce herself and welcome me to our town. I smile and take her trembly hand that she extends toward me. Her happy eyes are bright, even if confused. My smile is wide and genuine. Finally. A fresh start.
