Have Fun Writing About This Character

Today’s prompt is to have fun writing about this character. Maybe it’s the opening lines of a story. Maybe it’s a short character sketch. Maybe it’s the backstory for this little girl’s expression. Here’s mine.

“Uncle Matt.” My niece Amelia slid her glasses down her nose. “I told you not to give Pumpkin treats from the table.” She glared up at me, tapping her foot.

I gulped pop. A grown man should not be made to feel so awkward by a six-year-old. But if the six-year-old was the clone of her mother, who was the big sister who had been born without a funny bone but with a terrifying sense of what was proper, then such a reaction was understandable.

I swigged more pop as Amelia tapped her scuffed croc.

At least that’s what I kept telling myself.

  1. Haha! This look is similar to the one my 7-year-old gives me on a daily basis, but I really like the story you started with it! Here’s my idea:
I’ve been a cop in this town for ten years. I know who glares at me, who curses at me, and who’s going to get in trouble on a Friday night. But it isn’t usually the little kids. They want to see the inside of my cruiser and get a shiny badge sticker from me. I haven’t met the new family in town yet, and considering they moved in three months ago tells me a lot about their squeaky clean lifestyle. I see them play in their yard, walk to the park, and pull a wagon full of books from the library. They wave and seem like all the other nice families that I don’t get to know on a first name basis….which is why this unprovoked glare outside the ice cream shop takes me by surprise. “I called you because I figured you knew first aid. And then you arrested Nana.”
I take in a deep breath. If Mrs. Meier is Nana, and this little girl was in THAT house on Friday night…oh boy.
