Monday Sparks — Writing Prompts: How Would You Use This Setting for a Mystery?

lost-placesw-3035877_1280The theme for October on my blog is crime fiction, including all the many subgenres. How would you use this setting in the photo for a mystery? An innocent woman, running from a trumped up charge, is hiding out in an abandoned house? Teenagers out having fun stumble across a crime in it? A private detective believes the clue to a cold case is hidden in the house?

Share a few opening sentences. Here’s mine:

“Debris from years of vandalism and neglect cracked under my tennis shoes. I stood and gazed up the sagging, broken railing to the second floor. A door creaked above me. I gulped. I knew he’d be here.”
