One step outside the door of Cervelli’s Deli, and they were on me.

“Miss Riley, does your father often use you in his investigations?”

“Rae, how important was it to you to help your dad?

“Rae, what did Ariella Sharpe say to you when you met with her?”

The reporters thrust phones and cameras and mikes into my face, pressing me back into the closed door of the deli. I clutched the sack with Dad’s and my lunch against my chest. If I’d known they were waiting for me, I would have asked Mr. Cervelli if I could go out by the alley.

Setting my jaw, I straightened to my full 5’11”, which allowed me to see over most of the incoming tide of reporters. That view made them seem less overwhelming. But just as obnoxious.

Remembering what Dad had said about earlier cases I’d been involved in, I said, “The investigation is ongoing.” I projected my voice as best I could over the assault of questions. “I can’t comment.”

“Pushing off the door, I headed down Main Street toward Dad’s office. The noon sun warmed the November day, making it feel more like September than two weeks before Thanksgiving. The orange leaves of the almost bare maple trees lining the street looked like sparks against the clear blue sky. But I couldn’t slow down and enjoy the balmy day with reporters moving with me like a dozen extra shadows.

Marlin County, Ohio, had definitely gained its fifteen minutes of fame. Unfortunately, my family was caught in the spotlight. The case on Halloween had been weird enough to snag national attention. And then two days ago, Dad had made an arrest in the Sharpe case. Since it involved a New York novelist and his supermodel wife, even more reporters and influencers had shown up.

“Miss Riley, you’re not a cop. Why can’t you comment?”

“Rae, did your father order you not to talk to reporters?”

Shoot fires. The light at the corner of Main and Sugar was red. I’d have to wait.

Avoiding eye contact, I stared over most of their heads to the door of the old, dingy white building that housed the sheriff’s department.

“How accurate is the report that you’re the brains behind your father’s success in solving his recent, high-profile cases?”

“What?” I gawked at the reporter who’d asked the question.

She was thin, middle-aged, average height, with her silvery gray hair cut short except for her bangs that slanted across her forehead. “You’ve been instrumental in your father’s cases, haven’t you?”

“I—uh

“Is it true you didn’t know Sheriff Malinowski was your father until last year?”

My eyes threatened to leave their sockets. How did she know that? Dad and I discovering each other last Christmas was no secret in the county. But how had this stranger found out these details? And why bother?

The rest of the reporters joined in.

“Is that true, Miss Riley?”

“How did you find out Sheriff Malinowski is your father?”

They pressed against my arms, my back, and the light had cycled through green and was red again.
”

“She won’t talk to you.” The bellow came from across the street, whipping the crowd in its direction.

Dad’s powerful, 6’6″ frame filled the front door of the sheriff’s office, looking like Thor had given up Asgard to become a sheriff in rural Ohio.

The light turned green.

I catapulted onto the crosswalk, jostling several reporters, and ran to Dad, my camera backpack bouncing against my jean jacket.

The reporters charged after me.”

Researching Cozy Mysteries

I’m guest blogging today at American Christian Fiction Writers about researching cozy mysteries. Here’s the opening paragraphs

Yes, you read the title right. But what research? We’re not writing historical fiction or scifi. We just need to set a cozy mystery in a cute small town with tons of ugly secrets. Create a likable amateur detective with a quirky sidekick. Throw in an unlikable victim, shifty suspects, and an even more unlikable villain, and the cozy mystery practically writes itself.

Well, not quite.

Here is my whole post on why I find conducting research critical for my cozy mystery series, Rae Riley Mysteries.

Here are more tips on writing mysteries.

Hey, My Book’s a Finalist!

Very excited to let you know that A Storm of Doubts is a finalist in the YA novel category for the Selah Awards, which is handed out at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference! My Christmas mystery short story, “A Rose from the Ashes”, which started my Rae Riley mystery series, was a finalist in the short story category in 2020. So I’m thrilled to be nominated for a novel this time. The winners will be announced at the conference at the end of May. I’m hoping to attend

A Storm of Doubts is my second novel. If you’d like to read the series in order, here’s the list.

#1 “A Rose from the Ashes” in Christmas fiction off the beaten path

Nineteen-year-old Rae Riley knows she needs to fulfill her late mother’s dying wish. But she needs even more to find her father. And the man who attacked her mother twenty years ago on Christmas Eve and left her to burn in an abandoned building. And if her father and the attacker are one and the same.

#2 A Shadow on the Snow

Nineteen-year-old Rae Riley can barely believe her gamble paid off. After spending seven months investigating the identity of her father and whether he tried to murder her mother, Rae has been accepted by her dad, Sheriff Walter “Mal” Malinowski IV, and his immediate family with open hearts. And for the first time in her life, Rae is making friends, jamming with three cute cops who play outlaw country music. But someone is leaving Rae threatening notes, reminding her of her late mother’s notorious past when Bella Rydell wrecked homes and lives during the few years she lived in rural Marlin County, Ohio. Fearing the threats will make Mal and his family reject her, Rae investigates the mystery on her own. But her amateur sleuthing may cost her the father she’s always wanted when the stalker changes targets and takes dead aim at Mal.

#3 A Storm of Doubts

Her dad said nothing could change their relationship. But what if he wasn’t her dad?

Summer gets off to a rocky start for twenty-year-old Rae Riley when the ex-wife of family friend Jason Carlisle claims their youngest child isn’t his and Rae’s con man uncle Troy returns to Marlin County, Ohio. Rae is already at odds with her father, Sheriff Walter “Mal” Malinowski, over her desire to help people in trouble. When she extends that help to Uncle Troy and Jason’s ex-wife, she and Mal clash even more.

Then the ex-wife disappears, and Jason and his brother Rick are two of the main suspects. As Rae and her Aunt Carrie, a private investigator hired to protect Jason’s kids, work to discover what really happened, Rae wrestles with Troy’s insinuations that she may be calling the wrong Malinowski “Dad.”

Bonus Story: “Bovine” in Ohio Trail Mix: Adventures and Inspiration along the Ohio Literary Trail

This story isn’t exactly part of the Rae Riley series because Rae only plays a minor role in it. But other members of her family take center stage when an elitist author comes to a backwater Ohio county, thinking he’s found the perfect setting for the perfect crime.
