Monday Sparks — Writing Prompts: Who are Your Favorite Book Characters?

bookw-1012275_1280May’s theme is all about characters, my favorite aspect of writing. All my stories are character-driven. Once I know my main characters, I can run with my plots and settings. Reading about characters who touch me or with whom I identify inspires me to develop my own.

I have lots of favorites, but these are some of the characters I visit over and over again.

  • Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson
  • Archie Goodwin of the Nero Wolfe mysteries
  • The rabbits of Watership Down
  • Jeeves and Wooster by P.G. Wodehouse
  • Father Brown by G.K. Chesterton
  • Montague Egg by Dorothy L. Sayers

So who are your favorite book characters?

Monday Sparks — Writing Prompts: Poetry Everywhere and Anywhere

fantasyw-3792552_1280Where do you find inspiration for poetry? Nature ignites my creative spark as well as holidays and season. Also, things that annoy me. My poem for July was born from the way extreme summer weather seems to exist just to test humans.

If you find you are running out of inspiration, check these ideas in a post from Almost an Author. Two ideas that snagged my attention are describing a color — one of my favorite books on poetry is Red Sings from the Treetops, which describes the season in color — and personifying a disease. I can picture a cold as a guest who drops in unexpectedly and won’t leave.

What sparks ignite your poetry?

Monday Sparks — Writing Prompts: Spring Haiku

springw-316535_1280This month, my theme is poetry and figurative language. Here’s my haiku to celebrate the new season. IF you write a haiku, feel free to share it below in the comments.

Reaching, stretching, shoots

Push through darkness for one chance

To grasp a sunbeam.

Monday Sparks — What’s Your Favorite Meal?

pork-ribsw-561012_1280This month’s theme is food and family, due to Thanksgiving being celebrated on November 22. So what’s your favorite meal? For me, my favorite has always combined good food with good company.

I host a family Halloween party every year. My husband does all the cooking. The center of the meal is his ribs. He does them two ways — dry rub and with a sauce. Both are delectable. Sharing his delicious food with my family as we enjoy conversation makes many wonderful memories.

What’s your favorite meal?
