autumn-2541610_1280How would you describe September? This poems describes many of the feelings I experience in fall.

September

The breezes taste of apple peel.

The air is full of smells to feel —

Ripe fruit, old footballs, drying grass,

New books  and blackboard chalk in class.

The bee, his hive well-honeyed, hums

While Mother cuts chrysanthemums.

Like plates washed clean with suds, the days

Are polished with a morning haze.

by John Updike

This poem is from A Child’s Calendarwhich I have written about before because I love the poems in it. It makes me want to try my hand at a poem in a similar tone.

This is what I have so far:

The sun rises with a shout,

“The day is now. Get up! Get out!”

How does the poem inspire you?
